It's Never Too Late To Start Over, Right?

It's April 11th, 1987, and I just turned 5 years old. I unwrapped one of my very first Transformers, Hun-Grrr. This is the only picture of me with a Transformer, that I know of, that exists...well, as a child anyway.

I have decided to embark on a large mission. That mission is to aquire a full set of G1 Transformers (Series 1 - Series 5) and if that wasn't hard enough, I want their packaging too. I'm not looking for brand new sealed figures, and they don't have to be in pristine condition. They just have to look good, and not be broken, and be complete. I am by no means rich or have money to burn. This is going to be a slow, 1 or 2 a month process. Maybe more for the cheaper smaller figures.

My original collection from when I was a child was comprised of almost every Transformer out there. Between rummage sales and clearence, my parents tried to get as many of these awesome figures for me as they could. As fate would have it, in 1992, my toys were donated to a church auction without my knowledge. I was nowhere near the town the auction was in, I only heard about it after the fact. They were ALL sold. I'm sure someone got very lucky that day.

So here I am, starting from scratch. I already collect MOTU stuff, new and old, but not much. I collected Transformers Animated but that series is dead. So, I just decided I'm tired of spending my money on new toys. I want the old ones back.

My first figure will be arriving shortly...

  1. This is really cool, and I look forward to following your progress.

That really sucks about the toys being donated without your knowledge. It's so infuriating when parents do that.

Also, it's too bad you're not really collecting all of G1. A lot of the later stuff (Pretenders, Micromasters, Action Masters) is very cool, although under-appreciated. There are some great characters from those eras too. Granted, those toys are also more scarce and expensive.

  2. Maybe I'll warm up to the idea. I'm already dreading trying to figure out when I'm going to get figures like reflector and Fortress Maximus.

  3. Fort Max is a bear. Loose and complete, high hundreds. Boxed, you're talking maybe a grand or two. But he is awesome.

As for the later G1 stuff, it really depends on what Transformers are important you. If your desire is to have a complete collection of G1 toys from 1984-1988, then that's a tough goal in itself. :) But I definitely can recommend some of the toys past that.

Reflector - Well, it depends on how much you care about having genuine items. There's a bootleg reproduction of Reflector that looks just like the original and even comes in the mailway white box the original did, and the quality is very good.

Also, what are your feelings on buying legit reissues, like the Encore series? Often, their boxes look similar to the original (like Sky Lynx, Metroplex, Omega Supreme, etc.)

  4. Well, I like knowing that I have the original. I know it sounds crazy, but I'm setting a high goal!

  5. Well, the high goal is what makes this even more interesting. :)
